Apacer is looking to make its next PCIExpress solid state drive stand out from the competition. It's turned its shroud into a design reminiscent of sci-fi assault rifles. It features a barrel and sight aperture, as well as an ejection port and a few other visual cues to make it look like a gun, despite actually just helping you load your games and operating system that bit faster.
Make of the design what you will, but as Hexus points out, the internet was quick to mock it, suggesting it was more like a heavy-duty stapler than an assault rifle or sub-machine gun. Here's hoping it doesn't inspire any building fires.
Still, Apacer is going all in with its design, naming it the Commando. It's available in two sizes: 240GB and 480GB and slots into a PCI Express 3.0 x4 slot. This makes it capable of hitting sustained read/write speeds of 2,500MBps / 1,350MBps respectively. and random 4K write of 175,000 IOPs. For enterprise users, it also supports ECC engine correction up to 120bit/2KB.
Unfortunately, as of yet we don't have any information on pricing or availability but expect this one to cost a little more than your average PCIE drive. Still, as one of the smaller variants out there and not one that is looking to break any performance benchmarks, it won't be the most expensive one out there either.
Have you upgraded your SATA SSD to a PCIE version as of yet?
