The Game Awards have been and gone, and alongside the usual glut of game announcements, we've also gotten confirmation of the various games released in 2024 that were good enough to deserve winning some big prizes. Astro Bot was the big winner of the night, scooping four awards, but other winners included the indie surprise hit Balatro — but the most surprising was yet another award for smash hit Baldur's Gate 3, which continues to rack up awards, despite releasing last year.
News in brief
- Astro Bot won four awards, including Game of the Year
- Balatro was another big winner
- Baldur's Gate 3 continues to win, being awarded the gong for Best Community Support
We doubt anyone would have predicted the outcome of Game of the Year at the start of 2024, as Astro Bot seems to have come out of nowhere to dominate the space. The game, a sweet and good natured platformer with a love of Sony's gaming properties, captured hearts when it released in September. A callback to an earlier time in gaming, Astro Bot is a solid game in its own right, even if the nostalgia falls flat for you.
But also worth noting is the continued reign of Baldur's Gate 3. This traditional CRPG shocked everyone when it released to massive acclaim last year, with most people being enamoured by the game's enormous dedication to personal choice. It has depth rarely seen in a video game, and that promotes replayability to a ludicrous level. Larian Studios have continued to support Baldur's Gate 3 and chat to their community, hence why the game has picked up the Best Community Support award.
Balatro was another surprise winner. Well, perhaps not a surprise if you've played the excellent rogue-like, but certainly a surprise that no-one would have predicted at the start of the year. Fan favorite, Black Myth: Wukong, only picked up one award at the show, the Community Choice award. While not particularly surprising, it continues to show the love that game has spurred in its most faithful followers.
