Baldur's Gate 3 patch makes Minthara break up with you, fans enraged

Note: This article will contain spoilers for the Baldur's Gate 3 origin for Dark Urge and Minthara.

Baldur's Gate 3 may well be the game of the decade, and its meteoric rise continues. However, the latest patch has a whole bunch of fans angry at Larian Studios, as it has changed details of Minthara's potential romance with the Dark Urge character, making her break up with the player character if they choose to reject the deity, Bhaal.

News in brief

  • Minthara will break up with the Dark Urge if they reject Bhaal
  • Fans are angrily claiming this is out of character for Minthara
  • It may or may not be a bug

The Dark Urge is a rather extreme playthrough option for Baldur's Gate 3, as it pushes the player into committing a wide range of horrific, heinous acts, including against a number of fan favorite characters. To say it's dark is an understatement, but that just makes Dark Urge the perfect partner for Minthara, the drow Paladin.

As you play, it comes to light that these dark urges have surfaced as a result of the player being influenced by the dark god Bhaal. Players can choose to reject this god, and as a result, Minthara will now angrily reject the player character. Which, as many have pointed out, doesn't make a huge amount of sense for her character. Minthara's backstory revolves around rejecting the worship of gods, so it doesn't make a huge amount of sense for her to fall out with Dark Urge for doing the same. Others have pointed out that Dark Urge isn't really a follower, per se, but more of a figurehead within the cult, putting them in a very different place than the followers Minthara despises.

However, all may not be as it seems. While Minthara certainly acts as if she wants nothing more to do with the player character after this event, some players have noted they can still request to smoochy-smooch with the drow Paladin. It's entirely possible this is simply a bug, as there's a large amount of unused dialogue within the game, and the patch caused some to be unexpectedly thrown up. Time will tell if this change sticks or not.
