If you needed a new reason to dive into yet another Baldur's Gate 3 run, well, you've just been handed a gift. A challenge runner jury-rigged six mods together to create a first-person mode for Baldur's Gate 3, and the results are so impressive it even stunned Larian head Swen Vincke.
News in brief
- First-person mode is surprisingly functional, despite the game's officially isometric perspective
- The feat was accomplished for a challenge run
- Some elements don't hold up, as you might expect
Baldur's Gate 3 has been a favorite of challenge runners for quite a while now — there was the guy who played the entire game as a wheel of cheese, for instance — but going as far as to completely change the game's viewpoint certainly wasn't on our bingo card at all. That's exactly what Proxy Gate Tactician has done though, combining six different mods to create a functional first-person mode. And most surprisingly, it works!
Proxy found that ordering companions around without the help of the game's isometric perspective was quite tricky, so his run became a solo run. But what most surprised him was how well the game holds up from that particular perspective. While some elements of the game had been stitched together using perspective tricks, those instances were few and far between, and the game was, on the whole, absolutely stunning.
It even garnered praise from the highest of sources. "Now I want to play this — just look at it," said head of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke. And it's easy to see why he's so gobsmacked. The game's first-person perspective put Proxy in mind of nothing else but the first time he'd played The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim — and when a game's art direction is strong enough to remind people of a true classic, even outside of its intended viewpoint, you know you've got a real hit on your hands.
If you want to have a go yourself, instructions are included in the description of Proxy's video. With Elder Scrolls 6 nowhere near completion, playing Baldur's Gate 3 from a similar perspective may be able to tide you over for the time being.
